Sustainability

At Maytag Mountan Ranch, environmental sustainability is a core part of our vision.

Imagine the satisfaction of giving your children the opportunity to see edible plants grown from seeds. There are fresh vegetables and fruit from our community gardens, wholesome fresh milk from the dairy cow, and eggs from free ranging chickens on your own working Colorado ranch. These ranch grown foods not only taste better, but are much healthier to eat.

The ranch gardens are laid out and farmed according to the principles of permaculture, the technique of integrating edible plants with each other to form a symbiotic, self–sustaining system. No herbicides, pesticides or artificial fertilizers are used in the gardens, or elsewhere on the ranch.

Until 70 years ago, most cattle in the United States were raised entirely on pasture grass. Rotational grazing, as practiced on Maytag Mountain Ranch, is a modern way to preserve this tradition. As the herd moves from one section of grazing land to another, cattle feed naturally on native grass, while the land and vegetation enjoy periods of rest. The ranch's grazing paddocks are situated to keep cattle from intruding too close to an owner's home.

Rotational grazing is better for the land and better for our animals. It's also much better for people. Grass–finished beef is healthier because cattle are fattened on natural forage, not in feed lots. No hormones or antibiotics are used. Here, owners have the opportunity to enjoy this healthy fresh beef, produced right on their own ranch.
