Skiing
Just an hour's drive from Maytag Mountain Ranch is Monarch Mountain, home of the Monarch Ski Resort. This is Colorado skiing at its finest, with all natural snow in an all natural setting.
Monarch Ski Resort is located on the Continental Divide away from the crowds and is one of the oldest ski areas in Colorado, having been established in 1939. Located in the Saguache Mountain Range, it receives abundant natural snow with an average of 350+ inches per year. With an elevation base of 10,790 ft. and a summit of 11,952 feet, Monarch is one of the premier ski resorts in Colorado with terrain to match. Consisting of 1000+ acres of expert terrain, steeps, trees and bowls, it also has 130 acres of hike-to terrain and their Snowcat Tours offer some of the best skiing tours in the West.
Monarch has a total of 63 trails of which 14% are beginner; 28% are intermediate; 27% are advanced; and 31% are expert. Monarch caters to families with its great snow conditions and easy access to the mountain. Unlike most resorts, you can walk from your car directly to the lifts and the runs flow naturally back to the base area.
If a larger resort is what you cherish, the more famous resorts of Crested Butte, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Vail and Aspen are all within a 2.5 to 4 hour drive north from the Ranch. To the south of the Ranch, the high alpine areas of Wolf Creek Pass and Taos Ski Valley offer additional skiing opportunities.
And for those who aren't skiers, snowmobiling and snowshoeing opportunities abound. Deep snow in the surrounding mountains, back country wide open bowls and old mining roads provide many snowmobiling opportunities. Snowshoeing may be done directly from the Ranch property into the National Forest lands bordering the Ranch. The Rainbow Trail is a popular winter-time trail for snowshoeing enthusiasts.
