Hiking

The wilderness area surrounding Maytag Mountain Ranch has it all, but the hiking here is unparalleled. From easy to expert, from forests to Aspen groves, there are hiking trails in the Saguache Range, the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area, and the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. Don't forget the famous Colorado Trail and Continental Divide Trail.

If you're not ready for a challenging hike, you can always stroll along the Salida Trail through the city. The Rainbow Trail, accessible from the Ranch trail system, extends for 100 miles from the Continental Divide southwest of Salida to Music Pass south of Westcliffe. The Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range offers a wide variety of terrain to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. The trail crosses numerous streams, meanders through aspen forests and climbs and descends rock outcroppings providing spectacular scenery. Numerous trailheads along the Rainbow Trail provide access to side trails that ascend the mountains into the National Forest Wilderness areas.

Hikes up the side trails take one to high alpine lakes or abandoned mining sites. Many of the side trails wind through narrow valleys, past beaver ponds, or beside cascading waterfalls. Frequently, you may find that you and your party are the sole interlopers enjoying a lunch or afternoon of fishing at the lake. The Rainbow Trail is so named because it resembles a rainbow in shape and was formed from early trails created by timber harvesters, miners, hunters and fishermen. Sections of these earlier trails were joined beginning in 1912 to provide quick access for fighting forest fires. Four developed campsites and numerous undeveloped sites along the Rainbow Trail and the side trails provide ample private camping for overnight hiking experiences.
