Climbing

In addition to hiking, the rock climbing locations near Maytag Mountain Ranch are some of the nation's best. Within a short drive from the Ranch are outfitters ready to take beginners to numerous climbing sites or to take the more advanced on adventure climbs. Bring your own gear or rent the necessary equipment.

The area has several world renowned climbing venues including Penitente Canyon and Shelf Road. The upper Arkansas Valley also offers many high quality rock climbing outings.

When it comes to climbing the "Fourteeners" of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, you can't beat our location. After all, one of the longest mountain chains on Earth borders the Ranch.

This section of the Rocky mountains was pushed up about 27 million years ago, pretty much as one big chunk of rock. There are ten peaks over 14,000 feet in elevation in the range, and more than two dozen peaks over 13,000 feet.

Nearby Salida, located in Chaffee County, is home to the Saguache Range which includes 15 peaks of more than 14,000 feet in elevation. The county has more 14ers than any county in the U.S.

Topography maps and guidebooks about the 14ers are available at local businesses in the area.
